Big Boy 4014 in Sierra Valley

Sierra Valley, California
Bob and I had the rare gift of witnessing Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 as it thundered through Sierra Valley. There is nothing quite like the sound of this locomotive, a deep, rolling power that you feel in your chest before you ever see it. The ground hums, the air shifts, and then this giant of American rail history emerges, alive and moving with a presence all its own.
Big Boy 4014 is one of the largest steam locomotives ever built. Constructed in the early 1940s, only 25 were made, and today 4014 is the only one still operating. Restored by Union Pacific, it now travels the country as a living piece of history, a reminder of the engineering brilliance, grit, and imagination that shaped the American West.
To stand in the quiet of Sierra Valley and hear that whistle echo across the valley… to watch the steam rise in the cold morning air… to feel the power of this locomotive as it moved past us… it was unforgettable. A moment of awe, nostalgia, and gratitude.
A gift to witness. A gift to hear. A gift to feel.
And a gift to share with our community.
Warm Regards, Michelle
