The Year of New Members!

Clifton Chadwick

Your KeepItQuerque Board of Directors will hold the Annual Retreat to plan for the upcoming year next week.

We hope to leverage the increased awareness KeepItQuerque has gained over the last few years and gain new members.

We've got some exciting plans and will be announcing some new, short-term task forces to help us achieve our goals.

Keep an eye out for the task force that best suits YOU!

Por Si No Se Dio Cuenta...

One of the HUGE steps taken by the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) is the implementation of a Bilingual, Spanish/English set of materials that your KeepItQuerque Membership Committee will begin distributing soon.

Please contact us if you'd like these materials for your business.

Proofer Needed!

Hopefully most of you have been amused at my occasional typographic gaffs.  For those of you I may have offended, please accept my apologies.

Make Your Albuquerque Business Voice Heard Nationally!

To All KeepItQuerque Members,

You are, once again, encouraged to participate in an important national survey of independent community-based businesses. This survey annually produces valuable data to advance the work of groups like KeepItQuerque. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and is completely confidential.

The survey by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance aims to find out how independent businesses are faring, whether people are becoming more supportive of independent businesses, and to identify key issues impacting independent businesses where we can make an impact.

In previous years, this survey has provided unique and important data to help groups like ours serve you and create national attention for issues of concern to respondents. Last year, more than 2,600 independent businesses completed the survey, and its findings were featured in national and local news stories nationwide, including Albuquerque Business First.

Again, please help us help you -- moment to complete this important survey at your earliest convenience.

Talkin’ Trash; A Guide to Food Waste

In 2010, around one-third of the food produced in the United States was not consumed, and ended up being wasted. That is a troubling statistic, and represents a food waste crisis that if left ignored will continue to burn holes in the pockets of families, and contribute to waste and the myriad problems it causes our planet.

One of the first things you can do to cut food waste in your home is to stop treating the “best-before,” “use-by,” and “sell-by” labels as gospel that determine when food must instantly been thrown out. These labels are used for shelving and inventory purposes in stores, and you should always trust your eyes and nose before you trust a number on a package. Consider using food rather than throwing it out, unless your senses tell you otherwise!

Make your meal plans and take stock of what you have in your fridge and pantry before you go shopping, and shop accordingly. Consider joining a CSA to take advantage of freshness, and buy your groceries a few times a week and when needed, rather than all at once.

Follow our complete guide to preventing food waste to learn how your fridge and freezer habits can help change your wasteful ways, and learn which foods are more likely to contribute to waste in your fridge. By following a few simple suggestions and changing your shopping and eating behavior in minor ways, you could make a major difference.
