KeepItQuerque is a Member Supported organization - a collaborative.  Your support as members is crucial - and you can support as member recruiters!  You can tell your colleagues, your family, your professional acquaintances what is important to you about KeepItQuerque - and then ask themn to join you.  When we come together we can solve big issues like economic security for our community for our state.

KeepItQuerque - buy local crosses (and collaborates with) so many disciplines I frequently find myself at meetings and events where concerned people have been addressing "local" from their own perspectives for many years.

One of the folks I met at the New Mexico Food and Ag Policy Group was Mark Winne. Mark speaks on topics including domestic hunger and food insecurity, public health, sustainable agriculture, social and food justice, food democracy and food sovereignty, the role of public policy in promoting social change, and empowering individuals and communities to take charge of their own destinies. Say, that sounds like what KeepItQuerque is about!

Mark addressed the New Mexico Hunger Summit on July 17 of this year on the question: "how in a country as wealthy as ours do we continuously fail to find a solution to food insecurity and hunger?" Among Mark's observations were the following;

The 10% Shift is Happening All Over The Country!

Clifton Chadwick

Spending a dime from every dollar at a locally owned, independently operated business in Albuquerque wil result in the retention of $179,000,000 that we're currently sending out of town - every year!

That information came from a study many of our members participated in last year.

Did you know those same studies are being done in communities across the nation?  Did you know Las Vegas First (NM) was one of those communites?

You can see all the studied to date at http://www.civiceconomics.com/indie-impact.html - just click on the city you want to see.

Click enough and you'll sse the numbers coalesce into one big pattern - when we KeepItQuerque we have a more economically stable co0mmunity!

You can

Not for a fre anything - just becasue it's a handy way you can share the KeepItQuerque news, views and help spread the word - about KeepItQuerque, about your business and about other worthy local activities.  Got a favorite place to buy that thing you love?  Know someone who's a real "Giver?" You can let us know on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/keepitquerque or Twitter at https://twitter.com/KeepitQuerque.

Gary Oppedahl

Along wiht several Collaborators, Gary Oppedahl is  really "Making a Scene" in Albuquerque!

"Making a Scene" is the title of the talk Gary will deliver to the members of KeepItQuerque at our luncheon on September 17th at the Hotel Albuquerque, and as a member you can invite guests at your member rate! Register now with "Early-Bird" prices!

Gary Oppedahl is the Director of Economic Development for the City of Albuquerque. A serial entrepreneur who has fostered many start-ups in New Mexico and Silicon Valley, he is a key catalyst in the effort to increase technology commercialization in Albuquerque. Oppedahl plans on creating an entrepreneurial environment that will identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and job creation. By facilitating the commercialization of research, generated by Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico, Oppedahl envisions going from being reliant on government jobs, to being the ground floor for mind to market businesses. He plans to transform the city by building on the government funded, groundbreaking research already being done.Oppedahl recently came to the public sector as a business owner with awards such as Top CEO and Best Innovator.

The path to Walkability and Road Diets lead to Economic Security

Jeff Speck is returning to Albuquerque to present reccomendations from his previous "diagnostic" visit - and YOU can hear the reccomendations in person! the event is free and open to the public - call or email Diane Dolan at 768-3186

Mr. Speck was in Albuquerque not long ago, thanks to councilor Isaac Benton, to address our "walkability" challenge.
Like most of the America that came of age in a post World War Two period of accelerating production, cars and sprawl, much of Albuquerque only works from the driver's seat.

But our economy works better when we're walking, according to Jeff Speck and Dan Burden (who did a walkability study of the Mile-Hi Neighborhood north of Lomas).

You are encouraged to walk, bike and/or take public transportation to hear this presentation and help encourage an economy we can all thrive in!

The 10% Shift in a Pie Chart (or two)

Dollars spent locally recirculate 2.5 to 3 times more.  A shift of just just 10% of our budgets to Locally Owned, independently Operated businesses  results in the retention of $179,000,000 in Albuquerque that we otherwise are sending elsewhere.
