What's Being Accomplished in Our Town

Clifton Chadwick

You know that with so many engaged members that our KeepItQuerque list of "what's new" could be quite a long read!

To keep things in check you might just take a look at a few of these newsletters;

The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors' Bureau

New Mexico Mainstreet

It's not just KeepItQuerque members that are doing things, either.  Have you hear of StartupABQ? Michaela Brown gets folks with ideas together with folks that can help realize those ideas.  This isn't just about Venture funding, either.  At StartupABQ events you never know who's idea is perfect for you to contribute to!  StartUpABQ is something worth looking into!

Last Thursday was a magnificent day in Albuquerque and you may not have known it if you'd been watching TV or reading the papers.

That Thursday the New Mexico Food and Agriculture Policy Council met, and what an astonishing group!  Famous names like Eric Griego and Mark Winne were there, along with plenty of other active ground-pounding people from all over the state.

Have you heard of the New Mexico Food and Agriculture Policy Council?  Among other accomplishmetns take a look at this list;

Sampling of Legislative Accomplishments:

  • Becoming the first state to take action to improve children’s health by minimizing junk food in schools.
  • Securing $240,000 (recurring funds) towards New Mexico Grown Fresh Fruits & Vegetables for School Meals in 2014 benefiting school-age children across New Mexico.
  • Obtaining $85,000 in recurring state funding secured to purchase New Mexico grown fresh fruits and vegetables for school meals serving 6,000 students in the Albuquerque area.
  • Leading state efforts to increase funding for the Senior Farmers’ Market Program, providing seniors with dollars to shop at farmers markets.
  • Securing state funding to establish and support two tribal extension agents, serving the Navajo Nation.
  • Developing the Governor-appointment New Mexico Food Gap Task Force to research solutions to improve healthy food access and promote food-based economic development.
That's KeepIng it local.

Better yet, several of teh same people showed up later that night at TEDxABQ's Salon's sold-out

Better TogetherApril-Salon-web general-SOLDOUT

"How can we make Albuquerque better together?" was the topic and, after all the brilliant speakers were done, the short answer was "get involved!"  Among other immediate outcomes - including great food by KeepItQuerque member Slate Street Catering delicious locally brewed beer by KeepItQuerque member Marble Brewery, we organized a group bike ride to the opening day of the new RailYards market starting onMay 4th!

TEDxABQ is still looking for speakers for the big event in the fall - until April 25th!

And you really ought to check out the next Salon event.

If you hadn't had this thought before, "Local" is nationwide!  At KeepItQuerque we advocate spending your money where your home is - and if your home is in Belen, well KeepItBelen.  Live in Los Ranchos?  KeepItLosRanchos!  KeepItEdgewood, KeepItBernCo!  Well you get the idea.

Here's a fellow who's gathering ideas from all over. Among other folks who invite Michael Shuman to speak are our colleagues at the American Independent Business Alliance!

Perscriptions to Get Better are Available

Clifton Chadwick

The United Way of Central New Mexico doesn't get nearly as much press as those lists on which we're at teh bottom, which is a shame, becasues our United Way of Central New Mexico is recognized around the country as one of the best!

The United Way of Central New Mexico recently announced the Community Fund raised over $29 Million Dollars!

The 2013 Campaign raised an amazing $29,029,000!

“This community-wide annual effort includes more than 30,000 donors, hundreds of companies, unions, and volunteers. We were impressed by the record-breaking numbers,” said Michelle Coons, UWCNM’s 2013 volunteer Campaign Chair. “It is the largest human service fund drive in New Mexico each year. We have such deep appreciation to all who gave so generously.” 2013 campaign goals included increasing participation at workplace campaigns and the dollars raised for the Community Fund, which is disbursed to health and human service programs in the four-county area.

Every year The United Way of Central New Mexico gathers volunteers from among the community to oversee the distribution of these funds to the various organizations who apply for the Community Funds. This is so that our neigthbors are reviewing each application and investigating the merits of each request.

Each year the amount of money requested far exceeds the amount raised - even when it's over $29 Million dollars!

It's a rare case where an agency's project gets fuly funded, and in my experience the agencies that get fully funded a) aren't asking for that much to begin with, b) can show a compelling need, c) can demonstrate an effective means of providing for the need, d) have a solid record of accomplishment and e) have a solid team to make things happen.
So each year many organizations dont' get funded or don't get as much funding as they'd like.

Many agencies have improved their effectivelness after taking advantage of the capacity building services provided by the United Way's Center for Non-Profit Excellence. These services help non-profits meet thier mission and become better organizations as they grow.Andy Goodman
Many of the trainings are available for anyone to attend, such as the "Powerful Storytelling Creates Greater Impact" seminar presented by Andy Goodman, nationally recognized author of Why Bad Ads Happen to Good Causes and Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes to be held June 3rd - and YOU are welcome to attend the FREE event.  Many of the Center for Non-Profit trainings are available for a small fee and you can see what might benefit your business here.

We don't get to rest on our "Local laurels" and expect our businesses to grow.  The United Way's Center for Non-Profit Excellence, along with mentoring from other local agencies, can help your business be For-Profit, better!
