What Local is - and what it isn't.

So, if the Albuquerque Metro Area finally has a (insert name of national chain here) it's "Local," right?

Not really.  At KeepItQuerque - buy local member businesses must meet the following Membership Criteria for Businesses & Nonprofits
  • Primary place of business in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area (including surrounding cities and communities).
  • At least 51% owned by Albuquerque Metropolitan Area residents (for nonprofits, at least 51% of the board of directors) and,
  • Free to make your own business decisions without the need for approval by nonresident owners or affiliates
So, the local McDonald's in your neighborhood may be doing business in Albuquerque and owned by an Albuquerque resident, but they're not free to make business decisions without the need for approval by nonresident owners or affiliates.

Pack of Untruths

You may wonder why people are always picking on Wal-mart when all they're doing is bringing you low prices.  Plus they're going green, right?

Wrong.  A report from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance shows that (not only is it untrue that Walmart always has the lowest prices) they're also fibbing about their environmental record.
  • Nearly a decade after launching its sustainability campaign, Walmart’s greenhouse gas emissions have grown substantially and continue to rise.
  • When calculating its emissions, Walmart fails to account for major, fast-growing sources of pollution in its operations, including those from international shipping, new store construction and product manufacturing.
  • Despite its many media announcements about solar and wind projects, Walmart lags competing chains and many independent retailers in making the switch to renewable power.
  • Walmart is a major contributor to the campaigns of lawmakers who are blocking action to address the climate crisis.
“A closer examination of what Walmart is actually doing behind all of its climate announcements shows the company continues to externalize its costs on people and the environment,” said Stacy Mitchell, ILSR Senior Researcher and author of the report.

Sometimes an organization has enough money to convince us of something that's not true.  Back when we all watched Video Tapes (remember?) the dominant player in the market was the inferior product.  While consumers adopted VHS in the home TV studios stuck resolutely to the superior Beta format - because it was better.

Just because someone repeats a message ad nauseam doesn't make it so, anymore than Walmart's claims about prices or sustainability.

Duran Central Pharmacy supports local biz - $2 at a time

If you haven't heard yet you are to be congratulated for getting away from the media!  Duran'sCentral Pharmacy owner (and KeepItQuerque - buy local member!) has provided her employees with $3,000 - in the form of 1,500 $2 bills.

According to Damon Scott Mona Ghattas said the bills must be spent (not deposited) at local institutions and that 10% must go to local charities.  Read the whole story here.

Say "Thanks" to your neighbors this season

Black Friday.  The first day of the year many businesses "go into the black" rather than the red ink.

Nothing drives the economy quite as much as the 4th quarter punch of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukkah, and year-end tax consequences!

Your KeepItQuerque - buy local organization wants to say "Thanks" to all the members who are making an incremental shift to local.  We want to thank all our collaborators like ABQ CashMob; Go Local Boom; Main Street Crowd; the American Independent Business Alliance, Chambernation, and all our board, our volunteers and the members who've taken the time on The Rock of Talk 1600 AM and 95.9 FM (and a special thanks to Eddy Aragon of KIVA) to come share with Albuquerque why the "Buy Local" movement is so critical to our community's health - economic and otherwise!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Now, let's go help your neighbors' shops get into the black - KeepItQuerque - buy local!

KeepItQuerque! - Thank YOU!
