This weekend we'll be talking with Antonia Montoya of Change is Yours and Travis Chapman of AHL Garden Supply.

Among other guests in the coming weeks will be Tania Armenta of the Albuqueruqe Convention and Visitors bureau with tips on how you can show your out-of-town guests how we KeepItQuerque between the morning liftoff and the evening glows!

We look forward to having YOU on the show soon.  Just contact Clifton Chadwick (or call 991-333)1 to schedule your opportunity to share your reasons to KeepItQuerque - buy local!

What's our fascination with the big chains?

For years it's always "big news" when a new chain is coming to town.  Kohl's created a stir with many folks when they came to town.  More recently Gordman's did the same.   Remember when Krispy Kreme came to town and the Police helicopter landed there?  Why?

KeepItQuerque - buy local president Wayne Story, owner of Marketing Strategies Rx may have expressed it best when speaking with the Albuquerque Journal recently; "'Albuquerqueans turn out in force when a name-brand restaurant opens in town," he said, 'because of the large number of residents who moved here from somewhere else.

'They tend to connect with things they are used to from their old cities, and I think that’s what has a tendency to (provide) that initial boost that gets people excited to go there when they first open up,' he said."

This is especially true since many of these franchise won't enter a "small" market.  The Albuquerque of my youth couldn't have hoped to have anything fancier than a Dillard's.  Necessarily, then, back in the day we did a lot more business locally.  With new people coming to Albuquerque we've seen both the necessary market growth and the combination of familiarity plus "pent up demand" of people who feel they've been missing something they already know.  This has helped drive the expansion of these big companies into Albuquerque.

But every time we go to one of these places (I admit, I really like Chipotle!) we're sending a good portion of our money somewhere else.

So, as Wayne says “There’s no way you can buy everything from a local business; it’s almost impossible,” he said. “What we’re asking people to do is move a small amount (over to independents) and to be conscious about it when they go out to buy (something) and when they go out to eat.”
