be eXtraordinary; TEDxABQ

September 7th is a big day.  Not only will Sam and his Peeps be forming a CashMob but seventeen New Mexicans will be addressing a capacity crowd at Popejoy Hall. The theme? "Be extraordinary."

TEDxABQ; if you haven't heard about TED or the independent local TEDxABQ then congratulations to you for reading on!

TED Talks got their start back in 1984 and have grown year to year to reach countless people.  At a recent volunteer meeting many people referenced how they can simply watch or listen to any TED Talk any time and feel uplifted. One young woman has downloaded the TED app and listens to a talk every night as she goes to sleep.

You can start your TED Talk experience at YouTube.com/TED; who knows what will come up but don't worry - each one will inspire you.  As the TED site says these are "Ideas Worth Sharing."  Here's a great talk about spreading peace by running around.

You've been presented in this Newsletter a wonderful speech by a woman who is doing a great deal for Local Sustainability, Stacy Mitchell.  If you didn't have time to watch it before, you will be glad you took the fifteen minutes to find out "Why We Can't Shop Our Way to a Better Economy."

If you can't make the TEDxABQ event on September 7th, by all means join Sam at the CashMob - another good Idea worth sharing!

What Do YOU want?

Let us know with a message on Facebook what you'd like to see in the newsletter - and thanks for getting this far!

KeepItQuerque on KIVA "The Rock of Talk!"

You might have heard that you independent business alliance has teamed up with a rare creature - a locally owned and independently operated Radio station!
Eddy Aragon is the St. Pius graduate who owns "KIVA The Rock of Talk," Albuquerque's home for Dennis Leary, Dan Patrick, Jay Mohr and, well, more!  Eddy has offered KeepItQuerque time on his "Small Business Saturdays" for us to interview our members and share with our listeners why it is so important to KeepItQueruqe - buy local.  Eddy is passionate about creating an inclusive environment on his station and we're glad he's offered to include KeepItQuerque!

Would you like to talk about why "local" is important to you, your customers and our economy?

Each week Clifton Chadwick will be interviewing KeepItQuerque members on how we can all KeepItQuerque -buy local.

Our first guests were Jeff Jinnett of Marble Brewery and Duane Trythall of Excel Staffing and we had a great time talking about how buying local builds our community, strengthens our economy and why that's important to each of us. You can hear the two segments here and here.

Nancy Denker of Focus Ink, Inc. and Steve  Keator of Dressed To Kill joined the show and we talked about how buying local can create a healthier environment adn about how Local Choices play a role; listen here and here.  Jim Terr allowed us to feature his song "Mama, Don't Send Me To the Big Box Store."

You'll also get a little sample of some of our local musicans each week, like Syd Masters and Le Chat Lunatique.

So now you have some choices: a) listen to the show on Saturday and be part of the KeepItQueruqe - buy local community; b) join us on the show (we record on Fridays) and be part of the KeepItQueruqe - buy local community; c) tell your friends to listen so they can be part of the KeepItQueruqe - buy local community!

Send us a message on  https://www.facebook.com/keepitquerqueKeepItQuerque's Facebook page if you'd like to join the KeepItQuerque conversations!

You may submit your nominations to the nomination committee chairperson (and one of our past presidents) Duane Trythall at duane@excelstaff.com

CashMob generates revenues for Local busineses, but Shhh! - we can't tell you who's next 'til the last minute!

FlasMobs; who doesn't know, in this age of instant videos, what a FlashMob is? FlashMobs are for fun, for political propaganda, even for proposals.  The FlashMob is rooted in a very old tradition of "Agitprop Theater," where the "Agit" is agitation and the "prop" is propaganda.Originally a tool of the Stalinist Communist regime, AgitProp has been used by people around the world to create awareness for all kinds of issues, from expectorating on sidewalks to (as seen above) supporting contemporary boycotts, to Marriage Proposals.

But, you may ask, what's a "CashMob?"  According to the ABQ CashMob Facebook page "A cash mob is an event designed to support local businesses. We go to a local business as a group and spend our money...simple! That's it."

ABQ CashMob is in perfect alignment with the KeepItQueruqe - buy local membership.  Sam Hufnagel organizes these events, with very few exceptions, on the first Saturday of every month to raise awareness of the many local options we have to choose from and to connect us with our Albuqueruqe community.

The ABQ CashMob Page goes on to say, in it's Mission Statement, "The ABQCashMob supports local business and strengthens the Albuquerque community by bringing interesting people to events that stimulate our economy and create a social and business community. The businesses we work with are locally owned, non-franchised, and can benefit from large groups of small spenders. We only ask a few things of our CashMobbers: walk, ride, bus or carpool as much as possible; be prepared to spend a little CASH; check in and spread the word using the social media of your choice; bring and make some friends and have a great time!"

On Saturday September 7th ABQ CashMob will "mob up" at the southwest corner of 4th and Marble. As the Event Listing says, "The secret CashMob business location is downtown, a block away from Metro court. To meet up, we'll be having food trucks in the parking lot at the SW corner of 4th and Marble from 1-3pm and you can go to the retail business anytime you want after you've signed in and gotten your CashMob Button."

If you're not attending the TEDxABQ event at Popejoy then ABQ CashMob is an excellent way to join TEDxABQ in spirit - because this little idea of Sam's is definitely worth sharing!

See you there - we'll be the ones with the big yellow "CashMob" buttons on!
