Gov. Martinez: Buisness Friendly Tax Code

Wayne Story, Dr. Direct Results Marketing

[This article was drawn from a May 2nd New Mexico Business Weekly Article.]

According to Gov. Martinez, "New Mexico needs a tax code that is business-friendly across the board and not so dependent on tax credits and breaks to specific industries."

Gov. Martinez and her administration are working this year to develop legislative proposals that will streamline the state's tax code for businesses. She feels that regulatory requirments need to be simplified and implemented uniformly so businesses that aren't politically connected aren't subjected to arbitrarily applied regulations.

"We need to do more than provide targeted tax credits to specific industries, and not piecemeal solutions," Gov. Martinez explained recently.

AIBA applaudes any move to simplify tax codes and regulations on businesses in New Mexico. It seems every year business owners like us are further and further restricted in providing the kind of service we feel our customers want and need.

The significant burden that city, county, state and federal government shackles small business with each year costs the consumers of our products and services more and more each year.

Changing the tax code is a start. But we need far fewer agencies finding reasons to tell business owners how to run their business and serve their customers.
