Social Media Marketing Tips; How to use Hashtags

1.    Use terms that are catchy, short and concise, clear, and relatable, and make sure users see the value in using them
2.    Keep tags short so they can be shared across all platforms (note: Twitter’s 140 character limit)
3.    Be specific. E.g. #cafeowners not #businessowners
4.    Be wary of acronyms and jargon — use popular terms everyone knows, or that are well-known among your target audience
5.    Don’t overdo it. Two hashtags per post is plenty.
6.    Use the same hashtags across all platforms. Your hashtag will gain more exposure, and people are more likely to remember it if they see it multiple times.
7.    Make sure you search a hashtag before you start using it! What if people are already using the hashtag and it is associated with something negative?
8.    Weigh the options—should you create your own hashtag or utilize one that is already popular? There are pros and cons to both. Creating your own hashtag may work better for organizing events, but using already-trending hashtags has the potential to get you broader audience notice. Note: if you decide to create your own hashtag, be consistent and spread the word about using it.
